Paul James Field AM (born May 3, 1961) is an Australian musician and businessman who worked for The Wiggles from 1996 to 2020 as their general manager of operations and as a producer, director, and writer.
He is the older brother and former bandmate of founding blue Wiggle Anthony Field and musician and composer John Field, having worked with them and founding purple Wiggle Jeff Fatt in the rock band The Cockroaches prior to the Wiggles' creation, and also performs and records with John as the musical duo The Field Brothers. As of 2016, Field also performs as the lead vocalist of the rockabilly band The Sacred Hearts, which features Cockroaches drummer Tony Henry and double bassist/backing vocalist John O'Grady as core band members and was previously active during the 1990s alongside the former two groups. Other musicians who have performed live with Field in The Sacred Hearts as either band members or guests include his two brothers, Fatt, Murray Cook, and Jack Gatto.
He is married to Pauline Field and has 5 children who have also worked for or performed with the Wiggles: Luke, Bernadette (d.1988), Clare, Joseph, and Dominic. Field has expressed an appreciation for the development of the Wiggles coming out of the tragedy of his oldest daughter's death, having been quoted as saying "When I think of how much joy The Wiggles have brought to children, it's good to know that out of an event so horrifying, something good has come".[1]
On January 26th 2020, Field was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM).
Career with The Wiggles[]
In 1996, Field was asked by his brother Anthony to become The Wiggles' new general manager of operations. While Field's initial responsibilities were to book venues for the group to perform in, he soon started producing, directing, and writing their video releases and various television series.
In addition to managing the band and handling production and offering creative input, Field also wrote songs and sang backing vocals on some of their albums and occasionally appeared in a minor character role as an actor, most notably as the voice of Wags the Dog. Field also co-created and co-wrote the TV series The Kingdom Of Paramithi and served as a co-producer with his brother John on some albums for the Dorothy the Dinosaur spinoff franchise.
On March 16th 2020, shortly before the release of the Fun and Games album[2], Field stepped down from his role as manager and left The Wiggles in order to pursue other opportunities. He was succeeded as general manager of operations by his eldest son, Luke Field.[3]
Post-Wiggles Activities[]
Since leaving the group, Field has released his first solo album, Love Songs for Lonely People, in June 2021. In 2022, Field launched his own series of children's albums, Peachy Keen, which has released 4 albums as of 2022: Animal Songs, Lullabies, Nursery Rhymes, and Christmas Yay.
